UnitingCare Ageing is planning a new development in Shellharbour to commence construction by the end of June this year, with an anticipated construction time of 15 to 18 months, bringing completion around the last quarter of 2010.
This state of the art development costing approximately $25M will;
Accommodate low and high care needs as well as ageing in place generally,
Include a number of lounge and dining areas,
Activity rooms,
And also incorporate open community space including a café area for residents, families and visitors as well as sacred, spiritual space.
This development is just one part of a seniors precinct planned for the Shellharbour area. The new residential development at Shellharbour will be a 100 unit aged care service (60 low care and 40 high care) and will include a number of places for the Italian community as well as dementia care. Planning for the rest of the 4.2 hectare site, located in the centre of the township will continue over the next 12 months and will include adaptable housing for older people, key worker housing, affordable housing for families and a mix of community and commercial activities and facilities.
The development design has been undertaken with sensitivity to the environment, the aim being to reduce the dependence on natural resources. The high level of environmental design, we believe, equates to a provisional 4 ˝ green star rating. This increases the comfort and performance of the building for our residents, staff and visitors in conjunction with helping the environment.
The design process has relied heavily upon input from care staff to ensure that the environment created within the service facilitates UnitingCare Ageing’s philosophy of INSPIRED CARE. INSPIRED CARE, which embodies person centred care is about vibrant relationships, engagement, honouring the individual and providing holistic care.
With this residential aged care service, the financial investment by UnitingCare Ageing in the region is significant but the social capital UnitingCare Ageing brings, in the form of care, employment, and peace of mind for the local community, is equally if not more significant.
The growing older population will bring significant demand for the provision of a wide range of aged care services. The development of this new 100 place service will provide a significant enhancement to the support and services provided to older people in the Shellharbour community.
