Retirement Preparation Workshops

It had been recognised that people leaving employment were supplied with large amounts of information regarding their financial wellbeing, but rarely were they given any advice on the pitfalls of loss of networks and status, and the possibility of strains on relationships, caused by their retirement.

The project started in February 2004, when Richard Morrison, project manager for the UnitingCare Ageing, “Wellbeing of Older Men Project” and a group of volunteers met to start to discuss the issues that were important to potential retirees.

Focus groups containing pre retirees, recent retirees and 5+ years retirees were developed, where participants were asked about their dream retirement, why they left work ,what they thought that they would do after the first 6 months, and what had been the reality!

The results of the focus groups analysed a Workshop Manual and attendees notes were prepared with professional assistance. Once this was complete, 12 volunteer presenters were trained to deliver the workshop.

The Workshop focuses on three major areas:
- Maintaining your health
- Managing Changing Relationships
- Meaningful Post-Work Activity

The Workshop is designed to make people think about retirement issues, and is presented by retired volunteer presenters, who find it a satisfying opportunity to help intending retirees avoid some of the potential pitfalls of retirement. The first pilot Workshop was held on September 2, 2005. The workshops began with a male specific focus, however they have now reviewed their content to include all people who are retired, or are considering retirement.

The project is currently being overseen by a Working Party of UnitingCare Ageing volunteers, who are always looking to recruit and train more voluntary presenters . . . so if you are interested in joining this important community project as a presenter, please phone (02) 4943 6077 or email retirementprep@uchunter.org.au and training arrangements can be discussed.
