Playgroup for all ages!

UnitingCare Ageing Sydney Region has started an intergenerational playgroup at an ageing facility in Leichhardt – and the places have filled quite fast, prompting new playgroups to spring up in the Inner West and Eastern suburbs.

The group established at The Marion has been so popular, that new groups are currently being established in Haberfield, Lilyfield, Botany and Waverley.

Renee Smith, Leisure and Lifestyle Manager says, "I have the pleasure of witnessing the meaningful exchanges of friendship and fun between our residents, children and their parents. To see their expressions and faces light up can only be described as humbling.

The organisation cares for older people in a variety of settings including residential, community care and day centres, with a focus on positive lifestyles.

Many facilities within Sydney Region have contact with children on special days like Christmas and Easter. During these events, seniors within these communities thrive, interact and communicate with children on a level different to that of their day to day carers and neighbours.

“Through intergenerational playgroups we have an opportunity to promote interaction on a regular basis. It also has the potential for allowing the little ones to grow up within an environment where they can appreciate and understand ageing and have contact with seniors,” says Renee.
